1^st Wednesday of the month RESIN JEWELRY  11:00-1:00 $40.00

Learn the basics of Resin jewelry making and the many different uses for RESIN.

 

1^st Thursday of the month Fabulous Flowers and Fibres 101 11:00-12:30  $25.00

Learn flower making with different fabrics from burlap to laces.  See how to curl petals and apply your pieces to barretts, clips and journals.

 

EVERY FRIDAY Embroidery Circle FREE 11-1

Join us for a fun relaxing morning of sipping tea and creating.  For beginners to the experienced stitcher this class proves to be fun and encouraging while building friendships.  We make fabric books, patches, pillowcases….the possibilities are endless.

 

EVERY FRIDAY OPEN STUDIO TIME 1:00 to 5:00

Bring your art, projects, sewing or just come and hang out.  We’ll make room for you to work on your craft with no studio fee during this time slot.

 

1^st and 3^rd Saturday of the month Annie Sloan Decoritive Chalk Paint 101 1:00-2:30 $65.00 includes a sample pot of color of your choice

Experience the best paint ever!!! We love this product and NOT just because we sell it J

We will teach you the basics of paint application, two tone distress, both waxes, sanding, buffing, gilding and overlayment of designs.  You will go home with a piece of art to hang in your home. This is a fun and informative class.

 

2^nd Tuesday of the month TORCH SOLDERING  2-3:30 $35.00

Learning to torch solder opens up a whole new world of creativity.  Join pieces together to create a beautiful piece of jewelry, make rings, cuffs and bangles after taking this class.

Expand your portfolio of skills and express your artistic flare in a new way…and HEY!  You get to play with fire.

 

2^nd Wednesday of the month MONOPRINTING 11:00 to 1:00 $65.00

Monoprint plate is included with this class

Learn the fun mixed media art of Monoprinting using the Gelli Art Gelli Plate.

The options are endless with the printing of papers to use for collage, cards and coasters to printing on tshirts and fabrics for use in purses or pillows.  Only your imagination can limit you in this class.  Almost anything can be used to create designs and texture.  This class will not disappoint.

 

 

 

2^nd Thursday of the month RIBBON AND FIBER HAND DYEING 1-2 $25

How fun to get your hands dirty and create something new out of ugly colors of ribbons and lace.  Learn how to double dye, color remove, age and crinkle rayon and cotton ribbons and lace.  We use this ribbon in our clothing line, ribbon embroidery, brooches, jewelry and more.

 

2^nd Saturday of the month METAL ETCHING 11-2 $45.00

Using copper, bronze or brass your instructor will show you how to etch an image onto the metal.  Stunning results that can be used to make jewelry, key rings and book marks.

 

3^rd Wednesday of the month MIXED MEDIA ART

Design your own wall art using some uncommon items and new techniques.  There are all kinds of endless possibilities. Use these techniques on wood, canvas and glass.

 

A new WING IT class…FABRIC WEDDING BOUQUETS

This is an intensive all day class.  Learn 4 different flowers and assemble your own wedding bouquet using your colors and fabrics.  Your instructor will help you design and put it all together with added sparkles, trims and lace.  Want to incorporate something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue? What about adding old sheet music, old book pages or pieces of an old bible?  No problem, that’s easy to do… $100.00 a bouquet.

Thanksgiving...GIVING THANKS

THANKFULNESS

 

 

"We have so much to be thankful for..."

 

How often have you said that?  Or maybe you think you need to say it more?

 

Every morning when I walk into ALTERED WING STUDIO I am overcome with thankfulness.

To be able to create for a living has helped me become a well rounded woman, in more ways than one :)

 

The sights, sounds and smell of our studio are alive with possibilities that are new every morning. 

 

 The finches are singing, Bernadette is sitting on the floor sorting beautiful gemstones that will very soon be a part of her mobiles or wrap bracelets, Viki is hammering away or torching something amazing, Kimberly is "futzing" around fluffing the displays or gluing and waxing a collage.  Anne is asking "why" something works or doesn't work and then exclaims. "I'm SO EXCITED" as she puts her hand to something new.  Janet is sewing away in the back making baby clothes and designing unique and one of a kind baby accessories and oh, can't forget the doggie clothes. My Mom is busy making sure everyone has what they need all while cleaning up after me and my daughter is busy designing her couture line. PURE BLISS. I sit at my work table (when its clean) and take it all in. No need to look up from my work to be a part of what is happening.  Being there, in our happy place, we are all a part of something amazing.

 

  We talk about new articles we just read or tell each other about the thousand pins we sent each other, because after all, by now we all hold doctorates in PINTEROLOGY.  We laugh, cry and yes, get mad at each other sometimes.  But that's the beauty of this place.  We don't just create 'things'...we create relationships.

 

I'm profoundly thankful for our studio and all the woman who are there. Thankful, too, for the amazingly creative clients that frequent our happy place, helping us to make huge messes and build lifelong friendships and memories.

To Collage or Not to Collage, That is the Question

It's not just for grade school. Mixed media collage is a fun and thought provoking form of art that we practice in our studio on a regular basis. It brings healing to the soul and releases a sense of pride as your heart is poured out onto the canvas.  Using everything from feathers to bubble wrap, there really isn't anything you can't use.  If it sticks, stick it.

Some of our favorite classes have been the Encaustic Collage classes.  We've worked with women who say, "I could never do that."  Then sit across the table and watch as their creativity blossoms into a beautiful piece of art. They are moved by what they create and so are we. 

One day a woman came into the studio who had been broken in heart and soul.  Ginger sat down with her after handing her a canvas.  With minimal guidance, this woman began to pour out her broken heart onto that canvas.  Using every dark color on the table, she created what she saw inside of her.  It lasted a few hours as she applied layer upon layer until she announced she was almost done.  She asked Ginger for a rhinestone and being an art studio...one was found quickly.  She sunk the rhinestone into the beeswax and said, "Finished."  When asked what the rhinestone meant in the midst of all the darkness, she said that she realized there is always HOPE. She saw that now.  She didn't want to take it home, however.  She said she was done with it all. So we hung it in the studio and get asked all the time if it's for sale. It's a dark piece that speaks to so many people. She left that day with some HOPE that she found inside her while creating.

 

The children that take the Mixed Media Encaustic class have some interesting responses, too. Some of the kids are so deep in thought as they carefully add the layers and yet others throw layer upon layer without thinking about it until they reach the finished project.

 

 

 

We LOVE what we do, hope that's evident to the people around us. Please come and collage something with us. Create, learn, grow and make a chaotic mess.  We'll clean it all up.

So the answer to the question?

New Beginnings

We get asked all the time how Altered Wing Studio was born. The answer is simple. Two girls had a dream. We were driving around our town on a hot July day, talking about our studios. We both had been banished to our garages for our creative chaos messes. We thought about how fun it would be to have a combined studio and classroom space. It was just some dreaming for about 24 hours.

I went to work the next day and saw a 800 sq ft. building for rent. Just dreaming.  We called the number to ask about the rent and our dreams came crashing to the ground. There was no way we could afford that, but before I hung up, I blurted out a ridiculous offer to the owner of the building and to our great surprise our dreams took flight.

August 3, 2012, Altered Wing was born and changed everything for these two girls and the women who have joined us.

We started teaching classes and designed a beautiful retail area.  Each Resident Artist had her own studio area and we shared the classroom space. Pure BLISS. Clients would come in and watch their favorite artist work and often place one of a kind orders or ask "Can I do that?" Our response, "Of course you CAN!"

By December we were experiencing growing pains. So in January, we broke through the wall and took over the second suite. Then a week later, broke through a third wall and took over another suite for our sewing/design rooms. Now we had 2,400 square ft. of beautiful studio/retail space.

Our one year birthday is quickly coming upon us and as I look back on this year I am so thankful.
Since we have opened, we have always been in the 'black', albeit, sometimes by a hair, but always in the 'black'.  We have made so many friends, not just clients, but true friends. We've become a place to hang out and drink bad coffee. A destination... to sit down and create something all while laughing hysterically and making divine messes out of everything around us.

Tears have happened, too. But hugs are often offered and returned gladly. It's  the way we grow, don't you think? Create, cry, laugh...grow together. We have all changed in one way or another. For the better, I think. We dared to dream, took a risk and now we are flying on our ALTERED WINGS.
