Never Enough Lace

I can simply never have enough lace.  I love it all. I love the textures and designs.  The patterns are endless.  My very favorite is tatted lace.  It is amazing to me how it is so intricate  and patiently made. It's elegant and feminine and I have to have it when I find it at a yard sale.

I enjoy the tablecloths, too.  Complete with food stains...I manipulate them into clothing for a new lease on life. The memories behind the laces and ribbons that we harvest are vast and I often wonder who made them, who gave them and who received them.  Was it wedding gift?  Did a little girl wrap herself up in the white lace tablecloth and dream of the day she would be a bride? Did someones great grandmothers knarled, old hands spends months crocheting this beautiful piece I have laid out on my cutting table? And the gloves...oh, the gloves. What elegant woman wore these leather gloves with pearls hand sewn up the side? Whose tears were dried with the little white hankie that I just sewed into the hem of a garment?

I love it. I love it all.  Each piece I begin to create takes on a life all of its own.  I may think I am leading the creating...I have a idea in my head but then a piece of tatted lace falls to the side in a crooked little way as if to say, "I belong here..." and so I go with it.  I keep layering, lace, buttons, hankies and gloves until I finally SEE it. I stand back and behold the lovely thing that I created. I know it's going to be worn by another elegant lady who appreciates the things from the past and will feel beautiful  while wearing it.

I can never have enough lace, buttons, gloves and hankies.  They are my muse.
